Canute Sweeney
creates objects that have the look and feel of being old,
like ancient relics preserved. He finds inspiration in
the old
remnants
of a time long ago, like the rust on an old scrap of metal.
His work is clean and crisp-edged and seemingly doesn’t
have the wear of an ancient artifact; however, he likes to
juxtapose these two elements, the old and the new, and reference
the archaic in his work. His pieces talk about what has come
before, what has now gone, and what is preserved. Canute’s
work consists mostly of one of a kind art pieces but he also
does limited production and commissions.
He is currently enrolled
in the California College of Arts where he majors in Jewelry/Metal
Arts and will receive his BFA in 2005. He also works as a bench
jeweler at Gallery Flux in San Francisco.
