NICK DONG

There are 2 main parts to Nick's work: hand-crafted metal objects and mixed media installations. In his metalsmithing works, he is drawn to aspects that the material itself can be precious, delicate, smooth, elegant and refined. At the same time, it can be strong, rigid, weighty, rough and primitive. He loves to see all these aspects affecting our sensations when a piece of metal work touches our body. The metal works he makes are seductive, with an elegant and slick appearance. But they can also be seen as absurd, with decadent and obscure utilitarian functions. Nick likes his metal objects to be beautiful, sensual, pleasant, humorous and refined, and at the same time to reveal issues, insert criticisms, open discussions and convey his concerns for our culture and living condition.
